When it comes to local issues, students, like most Arlingtonians, are very passionate. Students’ voices may not be heard in local elections, but they can cast a ballot in support of their favorite Arlington businesses. The Arlington Best Business Awards (ABBIES), created by the Small Business Committee of the Arlington Chamber of Commerce in 1987, give Arlingtonians the opportunity to support their favorite restaurants, stores and other businesses.
To be nominated, a business must have good service, be unique and innovative, or be an Arlington favorite. ABBIES can be presented to new businesses or veteran establishments. Some businesses are chains, such as South Moon Under, but most are local, independent establishments.
Each year, there are about 15 categories in the competition, including “Arlington’s Best Dessert” or “Arlington’s Best Place to Dance the Night Away.” Some categories, like “Arlington’s Best Place to Care for Your Pet,” limit the number of businesses eligible. Although many categories involve food, not all winners are restaurants: nonprofits, performing arts organizations and boutiques can win under certain categories.
A business can win multiple ABBIES over the years, or even several ABBIES in a single year. Past winners include Bob and Edith’s Diner, Pacers Running Stores and the Arlington Food Assistance Center (AFAC). Award recipients receive recognition from Arlington Economic Development (AED), along with promotion on the county website and other local media outlets. “The recognition we get from the ABBIES, while hard to quantify, is greatly appreciated,” said Laura Jackson of AFAC.
This year’s nominees include student favorites like Lost Dog Pizza, ShoeFly and Toby’s Ice Cream. Votes can be cast online through November 16, and winners will be announced at the county board meeting on November 29.
