Junior Carl Buergler, a diver for nearly 12 years, listened to his iPod before competing in the one-meter springboard diving event at the VHSL AAA State Championship Swim Meet on Saturday, February 19. By the time the meet was over, Buergler brought Washington-Lee its first state championship since Chris Tyson won the 1000 meter race in the 2007 Track and Field event.

Buergler has won numerous regional diving championships, but this victory was “among the biggest” of his diving career. “I was pretty excited after winning states.  It felt good to know that I brought a state title to W-L,” Buergler said.

After high school, Buergler plans to dive for an NCAA Division I school.  “[I like diving] because it is always fun and exciting to learn new, more complicated dives with more flips and twists.”  Buergler intends to improve his diving as he progresses throughout high school, and eventually college.
